Siaya County has committed nearly Sh 1.7 billion to the expansion of its main hospital and the completion of the State of the Art stadium.
The county today marked a historic milestone with the groundbreaking for the final phases of the Siaya County Referral Hospital Complex and the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium.
The county will allocate Sh 300 million to the hospital during the current financial year. With a capacity for 500 beds, the completed project will seamlessly integrate with the existing surgical theatre, ensuring continuous services while adding new capacity for specialized care.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya stated that the hospital expansion will position Siaya as a regional hub for specialized healthcare, easing the burden on existing facilities and bringing advanced treatment closer to the community.
“The new facility will provide specialized care, create jobs for our young people, and deliver better healthcare for the people of Siaya,” said Tuya.
Governor James Orengo also emphasized the national government’s commitment to supporting county development. He noted that the healthcare expansion will directly address the needs of residents who have often had to travel long distances for treatment.
“With this upgraded facility, that burden will finally be lifted and healthcare will change here for the better,” Orengo said.
Health Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga encouraged residents to enroll in the Social Health Authority (SHA) to prepare for the benefits of the new facility.

He noted that 40 percentof Siaya residents are already registered and encouraged more to sign up to fully benefit from the expanded services.
In addition to the hospital, the county launched the final phase of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium, a project to be completed with the support of a Sh 550 million pledge from President William Ruto.
Once finished, the stadium will be upgraded to FIFA standards, expanding its seating capacity from 5,500 to 20,000 by adding terraces, roofing the stadium, and improving surrounding infrastructure.

Orengo said the stadium will be “the best outside Nairobi in terms of design and planning.” The total cost of the project is Ksh. 900 million, with the county having already spent Ksh. 700 million on Phase 1.
CS Tuya also clarified the role of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in the projects, stating that they will provide technical support and supervision to ensure efficiency and adherence to timelines, while jobs remain with local residents.
