Silent departure, no gathering or feasting; Gor legend Allan Thigo to be cremated

BY MWALIMU ADINASI: In yet another move that signals a growing trend in Kenya, the late Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars legend Allan Thigo will be cremated on Wednesday, May 13, in Bungoma.

Following his wishes, the celebrated midfielder requested a simple send-off, eschewing the massive gatherings and elaborate feasting that have long been the custom in Western Kenya.

Thigo’s choice marks a total departure from the traditional ceremonies afforded to icons like Austin Oduor Makamu, who passed away last year.

This shift toward “uncomplicating” the final farewell has moved into the Kenyan center stage recently, sparked by high-profile figures choosing simplicity over ceremony.

General Francis Ogolla: The late CDF desired to be buried within 72 hours without a coffin.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, also expressed desire to be buried within the 72-hour window between death and interment.

Even though the status of CDF Ogolla and former PM Odinga required elaborate and expensive state burials, their wishes were that they get quiet simple send off.

The former Rarieda lawmaker, Raphael Tuju, recently surprised his kinsmen by directing that, upon his death, he be buried within 48 hours at his rural home without any state officers in attendance.

The Legacy of a “90-Minute Man”

While his final wishes are modest, Thigo’s impact on Kenyan football was great.

He was a central figure in Gor Mahia’s most dominant era, he played for the club for 13 years between 1970 and 1982.

His brilliance wasn’t limited to his footwork on the pitch; Thigo also served as a coach after retirement.

He will be remembered for guiding Gor Mahia to an unbeaten league title in 1976.

He further cemented his legend by leading the club to the final of the 1979 African Cup Winners’ Cup.
