Meet Jeremy Ochieng, Dr Oburu Oginga’s strategist and head of protocol

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is not merely a political outfit, it is a mass movement with deep roots across the country.

Beyond the formal structures of politics, individuals working behind the scenes often play pivotal roles in shaping its direction.

At first encounter, Jeremy Ochieng’ presents as a calm and unassuming figure.

Yet, one could easily mistake him for a key decision maker within the Orange party.

A relatively low profile businessman, Ochieng’ has steadily carved out a niche for himself through strategic behind the scenes engagements.

Mr Ochieng first came into the public spotlight while working closely with former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.

He also played a role within the Nairobi Central Business District Association, a loosely structured political business outfit that brings together corporate and business entities within the city and its environs.

This association has historically collaborated with city leadership, dating back to the era of Nairobi’s mayors.

Coming from a modest village in Seme, Kisumu County, Jeremy has maintained a consistent presence within City Hall circles.

He previously oversaw special programmes under the Youth Advisory Board, focusing on consolidating and Empowering youth and women across Nairobi.

This office was well-structured, with coordinated programmes and activities aimed at driving inclusive development within the city and county.

What has recently drawn significant attention, however, is his close working relationship with ODM Party Leader Dr Oburu Oginga and Jaoko Oburu.

Jeremy played a notable role during the formation of the NASA Young Turks Handshake Alliance in 2017, where Jaoko served as Chairperson and Jeremy Ochieng’ as Organising Secretary.

The initiative worked closely with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and sought to bridge gaps in youth participation within the political space, particularly within Raila Odinga’s presidential campaigns.

Through these engagements, Jeremy has operated in close proximity to one of East Africa’s most influential political movements.

Although his schedule remains busy and demanding, political operatives often refer to him as the Party Leader’s protocol officer.

He is frequently seen alongside Dr Oburu Oginga and political strategist Jaoko during nationwide political tours, including engagements with members of Bunge la Wananchi across the country.

Jeremy has a clear message for the youth: register as voters and actively participate in the democratic process ahead of the 2027 General Election.

He encourages young people not to wait for strategic appointments but to seize available opportunities, whether at the ward level or beyond.

“For now, let us come out and speak through our votes. Let us support the Party Leader, Dr. Oburu Oginga, in strengthening the democratic ideals championed by Baba,” Jeremy says.

He has also urged party members to safeguard the democratic principles established by Raila Odinga, expressing confidence that Dr Oburu Oginga has the capacity to steer the party to greater heights for the benefit of the Luo community and ODM supporters across the country.
