Revealed; why young people are less interested in electoral process

By DUNCAN EMALI: It has been established that around the world, young people are increasingly disengaging from the electoral process.

This steady decline in youth voter turnout has sparked growing concern about the future of democracy and whether the voices of the next generation are truly being represented.

Understanding the root causes of this disconnect is essential to rebuilding trust in our political systems.

First there is imminent civic education gap which is a major reason young people skip voting. There is lack of reliable information about candidates, political parties, and the mechanics of the voting process itself.

Studies reveal that nearly one-third of young non-voters during the 2022 U.S. midterm elections cited insufficient knowledge about candidates as their main reason for staying home.

This underscores a significant gap in civic education.

Schools, the media, and political institutions must do more to deliver clear, accurate, and youth-friendly information about elections.

Without this baseline understanding, many young people struggle to see how their individual vote can make an impact.

Secondly, there is disillusionment with the political status quo; politics and politicians also drive young people away from the ballot.

Many believe that elected officials are disconnected from their daily struggles and fail to represent their interests or values.

Young new voters ignorance

To many new voters, politics feels corrupt, self-serving, or hopelessly outdated.

Furthermore, researchers note that youth often lack exposure to credible political information on the platforms they use most: social media. This absence of meaningful digital engagement deepens their sense of alienation and mistrust toward traditional political systems.

Thirdly there is mismatched priorities; while older generations may focus on traditional metrics of economic stability or national security, younger voters are heavily driven by pressing, systemic issues like climate change, quality education, and modern job opportunities.

When they feel these priorities are ignored by mainstream agendas, their motivation to participate diminishes.

Surveys show that over half of young respondents believe their countries are heading in the wrong direction, expressing deep concern about governance, leadership, and the future awaiting their generation.

There are structural barriers to the ballot; beyond psychology, structural and logistical challenges heavily suppress youth participation. Complex registration systems, restrictive voter ID requirements, and limited polling access disproportionately affect students and first-time voters.

In many regions, the requirement for specific identification cards creates an immediate hurdle for young people who don’t drive or who move frequently for school and work.

These administrative hurdles, though seemingly minor on paper, create friction that keeps young voters away.

Light at the end of the tunnel

Reversing this trend requires a coordinated effort from governments, educational institutions, and political actors.

Some of the low hanging fruits that can help reverse the trend include, enhancement of civic education where there should be appropriate introduction of comprehensive civic studies in schools to equip youth with practical, real-world knowledge about governance and voting.

There should be “Meet young people where they are” initiative; Candidates and political parties must connect directly with young voters through authentic social media and youth-oriented platforms.

Again the administration should simplify registration, that is modernizing the systems by making voter registration faster, digital, and more accessible.

Finally, the young people’s concerns should be addressed by simply moving past tokenism and actively prioritize policies addressing environmental protection, affordable education, and sustainable job creation.
