The political war of words in Siaya County has taken a another turn, exposing deep, fracturing divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) stronghold.
Siaya Governor James Orengo has rejected attempts by the Luo Council of Elders to mediate his ongoing, high-stakes fallout with Senator Oburu Oginga.
Insisting that the traditional reconciliation framework lacks the necessary neutrality and structure to address the issues at hand, Orengo has drawn a line in the sand, declaring he will only sit down with the veteran senator if four strict, uncompromising conditions are met.
The bitter dispute has prompted calls from various regional leaders and community elders for dialogue aimed at restoring unity ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Governor Orengo, however, has dismissed these informal peace-making efforts, arguing instead for a radically different approach to conflict resolution.
In a detailed outline of his position, the county boss has made it clear that he will not be rushed into a superficial handshake, laying down an ultimatum that targets both the mediation process itself and the political conduct of his opponents.
First among his demands, Orengo is calling for the establishment of a clearly structured and formal framework to guide any reconciliation process.
Orengo insists that both sides must mutually agree on the ground rules, scope, and objectives of the talks beforehand, effectively ruling out informal or customary sit-downs.
Secondly, he has challenged Senator Oburu and the current ODM leadership to demonstrate a genuine commitment to reviving the party’s founding activist ideals; radical, progressive values that Orengo noted were championed by ODM leader Raila Odinga during the party’s formative years.
Non-partisan mediator
In a direct blow to the region’s traditional leadership, the governor’s third condition demands strictly neutral arbitration.
Orengo has rejected any mediation team that includes the current leadership of the Luo Council of Elders, questioning their impartiality and insisting that the process must be overseen by individuals who are entirely independent and acceptable to all parties involved.
Finally, in his most explosive demand, Orengo is insisting that members of the opposing faction return funds he alleges were sourced from President William Ruto, maintaining that his camp will tolerate no external financial influence on the internal affairs of ODM.
These latest developments are expected to severely escalate political temperatures across Siaya, where grassroots supporters remain sharply divided over the direction of both the county leadership and the party itself.
At the time of publication, neither Senator Oburu nor representatives from the Luo Council of Elders had issued a public response to Orengo’s hefty ultimatums.
