Norway clinched their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stages following a thrilling 3-2 victory over Senegal at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
Driven by an unstoppable second-half brace from Erling Haaland, the Scandinavians tore open Group I to book a spot in the Round of 32 with a game to spare, mirroring France’s flawless start.
Conversely, the high-stakes defeat leaves the African champions completely pointless after two matches, pinning the Lions of Teranga’s fading qualification hopes to an absolute must-win scenario in their final fixture against Iraq.
Norway started brightly, threatening from a series of early set-pieces.
Kristoffer Ajer forced Edouard Mendy into a comfortable save from a corner before Martin Odegaard fired narrowly over the bar as the Scandinavians looked to seize control.
Senegal struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in the opening half, with Nicolas Jackson repeatedly caught offside while Norway enjoyed the lion’s share of possession.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 43rd minute through an unexpected source.
An uncharacteristic defensive lapse from veteran center-back Kalidou Koulibaly allowed early substitute Marcus Holmgren Pedersen to pounce on a loose ball, calmly slotting it beyond Mendy to hand Norway a deserved 1-0 lead.
Norway nearly doubled their advantage before the interval, as Erling Haaland struck the post and then forced a brilliant save from Mendy with a powerful header deep into stoppage time.
Real fight in second half
The second half began in devastating fashion for Senegal. Just three minutes after the restart, Odegaard threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Haaland, who made no mistake with a composed finish into the right corner to make it 2-0.
Senegal responded almost immediately. In the 53rd minute, Ismaila Sarr produced a moment of quality, latching onto a slick attacking move sparked by Sadio Mané before firing a superb effort into the top-right corner to reduce the deficit.
Any hopes, however, of an African comeback were short-lived. Just five minutes later, Patrick Berg picked out Haaland inside the area.
The prolific striker finished clinically, sending his effort bouncing in off the crossbar to restore the two-goal cushion and effectively put the contest beyond Senegal’s reach.
Deep frustrations
The defeat was compounded for Senegal when goalkeeper Mendy was forced off injured shortly after the hour mark, forcing Mory Diaw to step in between the posts.
As time ran out, desperation turned to frustration for Pape Thiaw’s side.
Appeals for a penalty were loudly waved away by the referee after Idrissa Gueye went down inside the area; while Ismaila Sarr managed to pull another goal back deep in stoppage time to secure his personal brace and bring the final scoreline to 3-2, it was not enough to alter the outcome.
What’s Next: Norway heads into their final group match against France to determine the winner of Group I, while the African champions, Senegal, must now seek a heavy victory over Iraq to keep their slim mathematical survival hopes alive as a top third-placed team.
