Clash of titans in Kigali: Gor Mahia and APR FC face off as 2026 Kagame Cup kicks

Two of East Africa’s most decorated football dynasties collide tonight at Kigali’s Amahoro Stadium as Kenyan powerhouses Gor Mahia take on host nation giants APR FC in the opening fixture of the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup.

Kicking off at 7pm, the Group A showdown is more than just an opening-day fixture, it is a high-stakes test of ambition for two three-time regional champions eager to prove their continental credentials.

Group of death

With 12 clubs competing across the tournament, Group A has immediately earned the moniker of the “Group of Death.”

Alongside Gor Mahia and APR FC, the pool features Ugandan champions Vipers SC and Djibouti debutants Garde Républicaine.

Because only the top teams in each group earn a direct ticket to the semi-finals, tonight’s clash could effectively decide who controls the group’s fate.

For Gor Mahia, the 2026 tournament marks a crucial opportunity for redemption.

After missing out on the 2025 edition and suffering an early group-stage exit in 2024, K’Ogalo enter the tournament backed by a wave of high-profile transfer window signings.

Despite their storied domestic legacy, the Kenyan champions have not lifted the Kagame Cup trophy since 1985.

A strong start against the hosts is essential if they hope to snap that 41-year regional title drought.

Standing in Gor Mahia’s path are Rwanda’s military-backed powerhouses, APR FC.

Having last won the regional crown in 2010, and coming off a third-place finish in 2025, APR FC are under immense pressure to capitalize on home advantage and make a statement in front of their supporters.

The tournament official kickoff takes place earlier in the afternoon at 3pm, when 2018 champions Vipers SC of Uganda launch their campaign against Garde Républicaine of Djibouti.

Vipers, who finished as runners-up in 2024 before missing the 2025 tournament, will be heavy favorites against the CECAFA newcomers as they look to build momentum ahead of the tougher group fixtures ahead.
