Breakthrough for FKF Premier League: 7-member transition team formed for autonomous future

The governance of top-flight Kenyan football is geared to reached a major turning point after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and FKF Premier League clubs agreed to establish a seven-member transition committee.

The panel is tasked with creating a roadmap toward an independent, self-governed league model.

The resolution was reached during a high-level consultative meeting in Nairobi following weeks of tension and boycott threats from top-flight clubs concerned over direct federation management.

The committee brings together experienced football administrators and club leaders to navigate the legal, commercial, and operational shift, they include Ambrose Rachier, currently serving as the chairman of Gor Mahia, Ruth Omalla of Mara Sugar, Japheth Munyendo of Kenya Police FC, Frank Ogolla who is serving as FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee as chairman.

The core objectives of the committee will be to formulate the legal and legal-governance framework to transition away from direct federation control, ensure operational readiness so the 2026/27 FKF Premier League season kicks off as planned on 22 August, and to improve commercial rights, sponsorship opportunities, and professional standards for member clubs.

The dispute stems from September 2020, when the former Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Limited mandate was not renewed by the FKF, leading to direct federation management under the FKF Premier League banner.

The breakthrough meeting was led by FKF President Hussein Mohammed, who backed the transition, emphasizing a shared vision to elevate the competition into one of the top professional leagues on the African continent.
