In Poland, Harambee Stars defender Eric Ouma helped Raków Częstochowa complete an impressive second-half comeback to secure a 3-1 victory over Maltese side Valletta in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League second qualifying round tie.

Playing at the Miejski Stadion Piłkarski Raków, the Polish hosts suffered an early setback when Valletta’s Manuel Morello scored in the 23rd minute to give the visitors a surprise lead into the break.

Raków responded with renewed intensity after the restart, equalizing through Mahir Emreli in the 53rd minute.

Tactical substitution

Head coach Dawid Kroczek then introduced Ouma in the 72nd minute to replace Michael Ameyaw and bolster the left flank.

Moments later, Valletta squandered a prime opportunity to retake the lead when Petar Sekulovic missed a penalty, a mistake the hosts punished six minutes later through Patryk Makuch’s strike.

Makuch then turned provider in stoppage time, setting up Stratos Svarnas to lock in the 3-1 victory.

The teams will meet for the return leg on July 29, with Raków holding a comfortable two-goal cushion.

Kilometers away in Germany, young Kenyan forward Maik Nelson Afri Akumu made his mark for Bundesliga outfit FC Köln during an 8-0 pre-season victory over Bergisch Gladbach.

Introduced in the 30th minute for Ragnar Ache, the versatile youngster put in a lively performance capped by an 80th-minute goal to close out the scoring.

Akumu has been honing his craft with Köln’s reserve team.
