The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has contained a herd of 40 elephants that strayed from Tsavo East National Park into residential and farming areas of Makueni County, averting potential human-wildlife conflict.
Chyulu Senior Warden Peter Njoroge confirmed that the elephants, which moved in two groups across University of Nairobi land in Kamboo and Kiboko, have been safely guided onto Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) land in Kibwezi.
The intervention follows growing concerns from Kiboko residents over recurring crop destruction caused by straying herds. Warden Njoroge assured local communities of their safety and reaffirmed KWS’s commitment to peaceful coexistence.
Mysterious deaths
Meanwhile, wildlife authorities are investigating the mysterious deaths of 15 elephants in neighboring Amboseli National Park, Kimana Sanctuary, and Kuku Ranch between June 24 and July 24, 2026.
Preliminary tests conducted by the University of Nairobi indicate that a toxic substance may be responsible for the fatalities.
