When discussing the Asembo clan of the Luo community, the iconic Benga masterpiece Asembo Piny Maber by Dr Osito Kale immediately comes to mind.

In this timeless track, the maestro, an Asembo native himself, serenades his homeland as a bountiful paradise, singing, “Asembo piny maber wachame maembe” (“Asembo is a beautiful place where we feast on juicy mango fruits”).

The history of these famous mangoes dates back to the 1970s and 1980s, when local students returning from their studies brought back seedlings to plant across their homesteads.

Decades later, Asembo mangoes became renowned throughout Rarieda Sub-County and across Western Kenya.

Beyond its arable farmland, the region also boasts rich gold deposits that employ many locals, while its lakefront location supports thriving fishing and agricultural communities.

Heading into the 2027 general elections, the Asembo clan stands out among all Luo clans for its unique potential to field candidates across every elective tier in Kenya.

At the presidential level, former ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo is traversing the country to rally support to unseat President William Ruto, making him the only aspirant from the Luo community currently seeking the nation’s top office.

In Siaya County, two sons of Asembo are vying for the governorship against incumbent James Orengo.

Former Rarieda MP Eng Nicholas Gumbo is making his third bid for the seat following attempts in 2017 and 2022.

He faces stiff competition from fellow clan member George Okode, the current Siaya County Assembly Speaker.

Mr Okode, who has led the county legislature since the inception of devolution and briefly served as acting governor in 2013 following a court annulment, has now set his sights on the county’s executive seat.

The senatorial race features Walter Okelo, a former nominated MCA and current Chief Officer for Governance in the Orengo administration.

Relying heavily on youth support, Mr Okelo aims to unseat ODM party leader Dr Oburu Oginga to become Siaya’s third senator.

Meanwhile, nominated youth MCA Dorothy Oinga is campaigning to succeed Dr Christine Ombaka as Woman Representative, as Dr Ombaka steps aside after three terms to pursue the Gem parliamentary seat.

At the constituency level, businessman and farmer Tony Yogo is eyeing the Rarieda parliamentary seat, currently held by Senior Counsel Otiende Amolo of the neighboring Uyoma clan.

Alongside these top-tier races, several other sons and daughters of Asembo are actively campaigning for various Ward Representative (MCA) positions across the region.
