Siaya County has intensified preparations for the anticipated enhanced rainfall season, with the agricultural sector working to equip farmers with timely weather information to guide their farming activities.

The county held a Participatory Scenario Planning meeting on Tuesday, that brought together agricultural technical teams, the Kenya Meteorological Department, extension officers, media practitioners and other county resource persons.

The meeting focused on interpreting seasonal weather forecasts and assessing how increased rainfall could affect farmers, crops and livestock across the county.

Agricultural extension officers are expected to play a key role in translating the climate information into practical advice, helping farmers make informed decisions on planting, crop management, soil conservation and other farm activities.

The engagement was organized in partnership with the FAO-funded Tunza Project, CREWS East Africa and the African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development (ACMAD).

Stakeholders who were in attendance agreed on the need for continuous dissemination of weather advisories through media platforms and agricultural extension channels, to ensure farmers receive information in good time.

The county says early access to reliable climate information will help farmers prepare for possible risks associated with enhanced rainfall and adjust their farming practices accordingly.

Farmers have consequently been encouraged to pay attention to weather advisories and seek guidance from agricultural extension officers as the anticipated rainy season approaches.
