Mombasa United promoted after FKF awards abandoned playoff tie, Sharks forfeit over referee assault

Mombasa United FC have been promoted to the SportPesa League for the 2026/2027 season after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Leagues and Competitions Committee awarded them the abandoned playoff match against Kariobangi Sharks.

In a ruling delivered on Friday, 9th October 2026, the Committee declared Kariobangi Sharks to have forfeited the second leg and awarded Mombasa United a 2-0 victory.

The coastal side were also declared aggregate playoff winners.

The second leg was played at Ulinzi Complex on 6th October but was abandoned in the 64th minute.

According to the Committee’s findings, the trouble began after Sharks players accosted the referee for awarding a penalty to Mombasa United.

The Committee found that the Sharks kit manager, Patrick Paul Otieno, and Sharks fans then invaded the pitch and assaulted the centre referee.

The incident was reported at Langata Police Station under OB No. 56/6/10/2026.

The Committee’s ruling made three key determinations:first Kariobangi Sharks forfeit the match, and Mombasa United are awarded a 2-0 win, secondly Mombasa United are declared aggregate playoff winners and promoted to the SportPesa League for the 2026/2027 season, and finally the violence and misconduct case has been referred to the FKF Disciplinary Committee.

The referral means further sanctions could follow for Sharks, their officials and supporters.

The Disciplinary Committee is yet to announce when it will take up the matter.
