Ogamba urges Kenyans to protect forests as climate change threatens livelihoods

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has called on Kenyans to take tree planting seriously, warning that climate change continues to affect the country through prolonged droughts and unpredictable rainfall.

Speaking during this year’s Mazingira Day celebrations at Nyangweta Forest in South Mugirango, Kisii County, Ogamba said environmental conservation was necessary to protect future generations.

“Climate change is real. Planting trees will also reduce global warming and help in fighting climate change. We must act now for the sake of the next generation,” he said.

Ogamba led the planting of 30,000 tree seedlings at Nyangweta Forest, a water catchment area that has faced environmental pressure from encroachment and logging.

He urged residents to protect the seedlings after planting, noting that the success of tree-growing efforts depends on ensuring the trees survive.

The CS also called on schools to use their land for tree growing and teach learners the importance of protecting the environment.

The exercise brought together government leaders, learners, teachers, forest officers and local residents in support of the national tree-growing campaign.

Kisii County Forest Conservator William Ojijo was among the officials associated with forest conservation efforts in the county.

The celebrations were part of the government’s wider campaign to increase tree cover and restore degraded areas through community participation.

Environmental conservation efforts at Nyangweta Forest are particularly important because forests help protect water sources, support biodiversity and contribute to healthier ecosystems.

Ogamba urged Kenyans to make tree growing a continuous responsibility rather than an activity limited to national celebrations.
