Revealed, what Raila Odinga discussed with US ambassador Meg Whitman.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga today hosted US High Commissioner Meg Whiteman at his residence in Karen. The primary focus of their discussion was Mr. Odinga’s candidacy for the next African Union Commission chairman. This meeting took place amid efforts by President William Ruto to garner support for Mr. Odinga’s bid, as the term of the incumbent, Moussa Faki, concludes by December 2024.

A confidential source disclosed that “Raila’s candidacy for the AUC chair was the central topic of discussion.” The United States, seeking to regain influence on the continent amidst growing Chinese influence, is particularly interested in engaging with potential leaders like Mr. Odinga to assert their interests in advance.

Additionally, the two leaders addressed the pressing issue of widespread flooding that has devastated many parts of Kenya, claiming lives, destroying property, and disrupting various operations. “Kenya, along with other flood-affected nations, requires assistance,” remarked the source, emphasizing Mr. Odinga’s discussions on how to support the Nairobi county government in tackling this crisis, which has resulted in numerous casualties and displacements.

Furthermore, the conversation delved into the potential investments that the United States intends to bring into Kenya, reflecting a broader dialogue on economic cooperation and development between the two nations.
