The leadership of the ODM party has issued a stern warning to its members of parliament planning to support the Finance Bill 2024 in an upcoming vote, threatening disciplinary action.
The Deputy Party Leader Wycliffe Oparanya declared that they would closely monitor any ODM MP voting in favor of the bill, which they deem unacceptable due to its imposition of harsh taxes on Kenyan citizens. Oparanya emphasized that such actions would betray the interests of the people, pledging expulsion from the party for any member found supporting the bill.
Oparanya made these remarks during the funeral of former Kisumu Central lawmaker, Fred Ouda’s mother in Gem constituency.
Kakamega County MP Elsy Muhanda publicly announced her intention to oppose the Finance Bill 2024.
She urged fellow lawmakers to heed the cries of Kenyans, citing their current hardships and arguing against further tax burdens.
Meanwhile, Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga cautioned President William Ruto against expanding the tax base, asserting it would not lead to tangible development but rather impoverish Kenyans further.
He emphasized that the government must tackle pervasive corruption within the Kenya Kwanza administration, asserting that substantial funds cannot be raised unless graft is eradicated.
Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode, criticized the tax hike as disrespectful to Kenyan citizens.
Babu Owino (Embakasi East) warned of potential mass protests against President Ruto’s government if the tax increases proceed, citing what he perceives as a disregard for the people’s welfare.
