Flood Alert: Government Orders Urgent Evacuation as Kiambere Dam Overflows

Kiambere: The government has issued an urgent evacuation directive to residents living downstream of the Kiambere Dam, citing an imminent threat of flooding after relentless rainfall in the Mt. Kenya and Aberdare catchment areas.

Internal Security Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo announced on Friday that Kiambere Dam— the final reservoir in the Seven Forks hydropower system—has surpassed its full supply capacity. The overflow now poses a serious risk to communities in the floodplain.

Dr. Omollo specifically urged residents in Garissa, Hola, Garsen, and other parts of the Lower Tana River basin to relocate immediately to safer, higher ground. He emphasized that these areas are at greatest risk as water levels continue to rise.
