MP Atandi lauds expansion of Siaya County Referral Hospital

SIAYA: Alego-Usonga lawmaker has lauded the expansion of Siaya County Referral Hospital, saying it will solve the perennial problem of overcrowding that has long plagued the facility.

In a post shared on his social media platforms, Atandi said the expansion would help address longstanding challenges facing the facility, including overcrowded wards, limited bed capacity, pressure on maternity services, and inadequate healthcare staffing.

“For the people of Alego-Usonga and overall the people of Siaya, the expansion of Siaya County Referral Hospital speaks directly to a longstanding challenge: access to adequate and timely healthcare,” Atandi said.

He noted that residents had for years raised concerns over the facility’s capacity to adequately serve the growing population.

Working partnership

According to Atandi, the ongoing expansion is being supported by the National Government in partnership with the County Government of Siaya, an investment he said would bring specialised healthcare services closer to residents.

“The ongoing expansion, supported by the National Government in partnership with the County Government of Siaya, is an important step towards addressing these challenges and bringing more specialised care closer to home,” he said.

As Chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, Atandi said he was encouraged to see national resources being channelled into projects with a direct impact on residents.

“It is encouraging to see national resources being translated into tangible projects that directly impact our people,” he said.

Atandi added that the expanded facility could strengthen referral services in Siaya and across Nyanza by reducing the need for patients to travel long distances in search of specialised treatment.

“We will have stronger referral services and for Nyanza, the potential for more specialised treatment closer to families and less reliance on long-distance referrals,” he said.

He described the hospital expansion as an investment not only in healthcare but also in the future of residents.

“A stronger referral hospital is an investment in the health and future of our people,” he said.
