Police Custody Death Sparks IPOA Investigation

MIGORI: An investigation is underway after a suspect, Allan Kamau Kimani, 41, died while in police custody at the Komwamu police post in Isebania, Migori County.

Police officials claim the deceased died by suicide on the evening of Friday, September 26, 2025.

He was reportedly found unresponsive and alone in the police cells, hanging from a window grill with a piece of his shirt tied around his neck.

Kimani had been detained after a relative filed a complaint against him for malicious damage to property.

Senior police officers confirmed he was being held at the Komwamu police post pending a transfer to the main Isebania station when the incident occurred.

The motive behind the suspected alleged suicide remains unknown.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been informed and has launched an independent investigation into the death. IPOA routinely investigates all deaths that occur while suspects are in police custody.

This incident is the latest in a series of similar deaths reported at police facilities within the last month, with comparable cases previously recorded in Mombasa and Kitale, which also prompted official investigations.
