BY GEOFREY KASERA: Police officers acting on intelligence have raided a homestead in North East Kano Sub-County, recovering a massive consignment of government relief food that had been diverted from vulnerable families.
The security operation took place at the home of the late Johana Nyasuna in Ngere Kagoro sub-location, situated approximately 15 kilometers south of the local police station.
According to authorities, the seized foodstuffs were originally allocated to the Muhoroni Deputy County Commissioner’s office for distribution to residents within Chemelil before being illicitly intercepted and redirected.
Upon entering the compound, officers discovered that a major consignment had already been offloaded and stacked inside a house on the property.
In total, police recovered 300 bags of rice and 250 bags of beans, each weighing 50 kilograms, alongside 20 bags of porridge mix weighing 25 kilograms each.
Parked within the homestead was the transit goods trailer used to transport the contraband, the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle, bearing registration number KCG 240F, was identified as belonging to Pontypridd Holdings.
The driver of the vehicle Charles Gichoki was apprehended at the scene alongside the storekeeper managing the illicit offloading.
Both suspects are currently held in police custody, where they are assisting detectives with investigations as authorities work to dismantle the syndicate behind the theft of public aid.
