BY AGENCY: Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office citing severe health complications, his office announced on Friday.

The 76-year-old leader, who has served in the largely ceremonial role since April 2023, confirmed his medical condition in an official statement released by his press secretary.

“Recent medical examinations have diagnosed me with Autonomic Neuropathy,” Shahabuddin stated adding that, “Due to this condition, I occasionally experience momentary loss of consciousness.”

Under the constitution, the speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) will assume presidential duties until a replacement is elected.

While executive power in Bangladesh rests with the prime minister and cabinet, the president serves as head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

Shahabuddin’s departure marks a significant shift in the nation’s political landscape.
