Prof John Okumu appointed Vice Chancellor, Kenyatta University

Kenyatta University alumnus and long-serving academic leader Prof John Okumu has been appointed as the institution’s new Vice Chancellor with immediate effect, after topping the Public Service Commission’s competitive recruitment process.

His appointment comes following a competitive recruitment process conducted by the Public Service Commission (PSC), where he emerged as the top-ranked candidate, according to KU Council Chairperson Prof Clara Momanyi.

Prof Okumu is no stranger to the institution, having previously served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) for ten years alongside holding various other senior management roles at the university.

“He is a seasoned academician and administrator who brings a wealth of experience spanning academic leadership, research, and institutional development,” Prof Momanyi said in a statement.

“Given his in-depth experience and strategic insights in higher education management, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement, the University Council is confident that he will provide visionary and transformational leadership that will guide the University into its next phase of growth and excellence.”

Prof Okumu takes the helm following the retirement of former Vice-Chancellor Prof Paul Wainaina in January 2026.
