By GEOFREY KASERA: In a bid to sensitize journalists on peace reporting ahead of the 2027 General Elections, FPFK Peace Resilience, in partnership with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), recently hosted a joint training workshop for journalists from Kisumu, Kericho, and Nandi counties.
The program aims to empower journalists to incorporate conflict-sensitive messaging into their daily news coverage. Reporters from these three counties are considered vital stakeholders in promoting peace, particularly along vulnerable border areas such as Sondu and Kopere.
“Reporting in a way that avoids inciting communities is essential for all journalists in Kenya. That is why we brought together these key players to focus on conflict-sensitive messaging,” said Malachi Okuku of FPFK.
“Our engagement will not end here. We will continue working together as the elections approach and beyond, including participation in radio talk shows to ensure this message reaches the grassroots level,” he added.
His sentiments were echoed by Castro Baraza, the NCIC Coordinator for the Nyanza Region, who highlighted the media’s unique reach.
“The media plays a critical role because they can access areas the Commission might not easily reach,” Baraza noted.
