The first nuclear plant in East Africa, set to be established in Lenya, Central Sakwa, within Bondo Sub-County, will undergo an elaborate approval and assessment process before construction can begin.
Kondele News has outlined a comprehensive explainer detailing the steps the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) must undertake, along with the required timelines, to bring this Sh500 billion mega-project to fruition.
To launch the process, the agency must first obtain land access authorization from the local community.
Because a nuclear facility requires a vast expanse of land depending on its intended energy output, the Lenya community must formally grant NuPEA permission to access their territory.
Following this, the agency will initiate extensive stakeholder engagement to secure community consent.
This critical phase focuses on transparent communication, ensuring the agency’s intentions are clear and outlining how the local population will benefit from the development.
The third fundamental phase involves a rigorous site assessment conducted by engineers and technocrats, a process expected to take two to three years.
During this period, experts will evaluate operational safety, environmental compatibility, equipment security, and overall community support.
To gather necessary data, NuPEA will install three major monitoring systems at the site.
First, a self-driven Meteorological Data Collection Mast will record weather elements such as temperature, humidity, and wind patterns.
Second, a Lake Monitoring Station will be positioned directly in the water to collect essential hydrological data, including wave activity and water temperature, crucial factors given that large bodies of water are required to cool nuclear reactors.
Finally, a Geological Seismic Data Collection system will track ground stability, seismic activity, and regional earthquake history.
Together, these three monitoring devices will record environmental extremes over the multi-year period.
The resulting data will inform the agency’s final feasibility assessment and dictate the specific materials required to safely construct the plant.
Once this initial phase is complete and a comprehensive report is finalized, NuPEA will proceed with the establishment of the facility.
