Kenya’s energy sector players have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the national power grid through closer collaboration and improved technical interventions aimed at reducing power outages.

The commitment was made during the State of the National Power Grid Workshop which brought together senior officials and technical experts from Kenya Power, KenGen and KETRACO.

The workshop focused on ways of improving the management and operation of the national grid to ensure Kenyans have access to a more reliable and stable supply of electricity.

Among the key issues discussed were power transmission congestion, improved grid visibility, system reliability, grid protection and control systems, as well as optimisation of generator performance.

The teams also reviewed the causes of major power outages and explored measures to prevent and minimise disruptions, including the strengthening of system defence mechanisms.

The three institutions noted that joint measures implemented in recent times have contributed to reducing the frequency and impact of power outages.

The collaboration has also strengthened operational practices and technical safeguards, contributing to improved reliability of the national electricity grid.

Looking ahead, Kenya Power, KenGen and KETRACO agreed on additional interventions to enhance the resilience of the grid, including the introduction of secondary reserves and improved mechanisms for maintaining voltage stability.

The Chief Executive Officers of the three institutions affirmed their support for the technical teams as they implement the agreed measures.

The collaboration is expected to contribute to a more reliable and efficient electricity system, supporting households, industries and other economic activities across the country.

The institutions said continued cooperation among key players in the energy sector remains critical to securing a resilient national grid capable of supporting Kenya’s development ambitions.
