The spread of Human Immmunodeficuency Virus (HIV) from a parent with HIV to their Child transmission has declined within Kisumu County by half from 2018-2021 falling to 22.2 percent, says Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o.

Speaking during the 18th Tropical Institute of Community Health & Development (TICH) Annual Scientific Conference,Nyong’o added that the County initially bore one of the heaviest health burdens in Kenya with HIV prevalence of about one in five among women of childbearing age which was a statistic four times the national average.

“Lamentingly ,in 2020 our institutional maternal mortality ratio stood at 220 per 100,000 live births making it among the highest in the Country and they were not just numbers as they say but mothers ,children and families” he said.

He however said on a good note that presently in the County,over 2,300 Community Health Promoters walk within the villages daily with digital tools in hand,bringing healthcare to the doorstep of its citizenry.

“Through telemedicine and electronic reffetal sydtems ,we are reaching far flung regions and communities around the County the medicine once forgot” he further said.

He however called each sector to play their respective position roles saying as the National Government holds policy and financing the Counties hold proximity ,resources and authority while institutions like TICH should hold the knowledge and Communities hold legitimacy.

Nyong’o also said that Health for all by 2028 is a commitment which must be strived to be attained attained as incremental adjustments will not suffice as there is a need to a decisive a shift to sovereign ,locally anchored pathways ,accountable to the people.
