A building collapse in Mamboleo, Kisumu County left eight people injured on Monday morning, after a six-storey structure still under construction gave way.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, which responded alongside a multi-agency emergency team, six of the injured were treated at the scene, while two others were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Emergency responders managed to evacuate all residents from the area before the situation could worsen. Police have since cordoned off the site to keep onlookers and traffic away as investigations get underway.

Reports from the scene indicate the building didn’t fully come down, it tilted and was held up by an adjacent structure, likely preventing a far more serious disaster.

Officials from the National Construction Authority (NCA) are now on the ground assessing the structural damage, with police awaiting further direction on next steps. No word yet on what caused the collapse, but the incident is likely to reignite scrutiny over construction standards in the county.
