The situation in Butere has taken a tragic turn as locals attacked nine individuals suspected to be child traffickers, resulting in the death of three individuals on July 6th.

However, it has now been revealed that the incident was a case of mistaken identity.

According to police reports, the group of nine individuals were traveling towards Kampala and had opted to avoid the highway to evade police detection, inadvertently placing themselves in a dangerous situation.

Local residents have expressed concerns over missing children in the area, and when they spotted the group, they raised an alarm, accusing them of child trafficking.

Unfortunately, due to a language barrier (as the individuals were Somalis and could not speak Kiswahili), tensions escalated quickly. As a result, three of them were fatally beaten by the mob.

Police officials addressing the incident have clarified that there is no substantiated evidence of children going missing in the area, debunking the claims made by the residents.

The incident underscores the dangers of misinformation and the tragic consequences of vigilante justice.

Authorities are now seeking the perpetrators responsible for the killings, emphasizing the importance of accurate information and lawful action in addressing community concerns.
