Shock and grief engulfed Uruadhi village in Siaya County following the tragic death of two artisanal miners in a mining accident.
The miners lost their lives after a mine shaft caved in, trapping them inside.
According to survivors, a total of 15 miners were working in the shaft when the collapse occurred.
Stephene Owe, one of the miners at the site, recounted that the incident took place just an hour and a half after they had begun their day’s work.
Efforts to rescue the trapped miners were made, but despite their best attempts, two miners succumbed to their injuries.
Four others were rushed to Siaya County Referral Hospital, where they are currently recuperating. Two of the injured are reported to have sustained serious injuries.
Daniel Okoth, another artisanal miner, urged shaft owners to prioritize safety by constructing structures that can prevent such collapses in the future.
He emphasized the need for stringent safety measures to protect the lives of those working in the hazardous environment.
