Arrested for forcing a widow to pour soil inside the grave

KISII: A burial ceremony in Nyabisimba, Nyamira County, turned tragic when a woman was assaulted at a cemetery for not wanting to participate in traditional rites.

The victim, who was invited by her mother-in-law to the funeral of her deceased ex-husband, was allegedly attacked by in-laws who held her responsible for her death.

Following her refusal to pour soil onto the grave following burial procedures, three men were said to have attacked and left her with injuries.

The suspects—Robert Pokea Sarudi, 43 years, Bismark Ondiek Sarudi, 40 years, and Lameck Ogindo Osoro, 27 years—were later arrested at Mwongorisi sub-location following investigations by the police.

The attack occurred on March 21, 2025. The woman, who had been separated from her former husband for many years, had obeyed the call to attend the funeral with their kids.

But what was meant to be a moment of mourning quickly turned sour.

The suspects are currently being held at Kiambere Police Station while police officers continue with their inquiries and arrest more individuals who participated in the attack.
