Orwoba’s woes; Nairobi Court slaps former lawmaker with Sh10million fine

CITY CORRIDORS: A Nairobi court has ordered former nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba to pay Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye some total of Sh10.5 million in damages, ruling that she defamed him with malicious social media posts alleging sexual harassment.

Delivering the judgment yesterday on Monday July 14, Magistrate Ruguru Ngotho found Orwoba’s statements that were shared on her WhatsApp status, Facebook page, and X accounts to be false, defamatory, libelous, and malicious.

The court further clarified that these posts, despite their serious accusations against Nyegenye, were not protected by parliamentary privilege and were made with clear ill intent.

“The words posted and published by the Defendant concerning the Plaintiff are defamatory, libelous, and malicious,” the magistrate stated in the ruling seen by Kondele News.

The awarded sum includes Ksh8 million in general damages and Ksh2.5 million in exemplary and aggravated damages.

Orwoba faces an additional Ksh1 million in default damages if she does not issue a public apology within 30 days via her social platforms and a national newspaper.

Additionally, a permanent injunction has been put in place, prohibiting Orwoba or anyone associated with her from publishing any further defamatory content about the Clerk.
