No construction on Nyamira University, locals resist

NYAMIRA: For the government, the recent groundbreaking ceremony at Kiabonyoru was supposed to mark the end of the debate.

For Peter Ariga Mokaya and a section of Nyamira residents, it was just another reason to return to court.

A fresh petition, the third of its kind, has been filed to stop the construction of Nyamira University at the site identified by President William Ruto.

Despite the government mobilizing machinery and holding a high-profile launch presided over by CSs Julius Ogamba and Soipan Tuya, the resistance has refused to fade.

The petitioners claim the Kiabonyoru site is fundamentally unsuitable and was chosen over better locations proposed by residents solely because of a verbal presidential decree.

This wave of relentless litigation suggests that the government is facing more than just a legal hurdle; they are facing a community that feels unheard.

As the case lands before the judge, the question remains: can a project succeed when the people it is meant to serve are suing to stop it?
