Wandayi to Orengo: “Try Running Against Ruto in 2027 and See What Happens”

Energy Cabinet Secretary, Opiyo Wandayi challenged Siaya Governor James Orengo to thrust himself into the 2027 presidential contest.

During a project tour in Ugambe, Bondo sub-county, Wandayi challenged the Governor to stop “misleading the people” and instead contest the presidency himself if he truly believes President William Ruto can be defeated in 2027.

Wandayi, who has increasingly positioned himself as a bridge between the region and the current administration, was blunt about the political reality as he sees it.

“I have seen some leaders saying things that simply do not make sense,” Wandayi said, directly addressing Orengo’s recent claims that the ODM party is ready to field its own candidate.

“It is a bare fact that no one has the ability to outsmart President Ruto in 2027. As a region, we must be wise.”

The CS argued that the most strategic move for the Luo community is to secure a pre-election pact with the President rather than staying in the opposition.

He warned that the region risks losing the gains made by the late former Prime Minister, who had moved the community closer to the center of power.

“If you think you can contest and win the presidency, then go ahead,” Wandayi challenged. “If not, stop misleading the people. We must avoid anything that takes us out of the government.”

Wandayi also took a swipe at the consistency of his critics. He noted that many leaders currently castigating President Ruto, including some who served alongside him in Parliament—once enjoyed the benefits of being in government themselves.

As the 2027 clock ticks, the question remains: Will Nyanza follow Wandayi’s “join them” strategy, or will it rally behind the defiant stance of Governor Orengo?
