Former CS Raphael Tuju rushed to hospital after condition worsened

The high-stakes tug-of-war between the DCI and Raphael Tuju’s legal team moved from the police cells to the hospital ward today.

Despite a spirited push by the ODPP to have the former Cabinet Secretary take a plea for allegedly ‘staging’ his own abduction, a worsening medical emergency has forced a halt to proceedings.

Tuju now remains under heavy police guard at Karen Hospital, with his lawyers accusing the state of prioritized prosecution over his right to life.

The transfer follows a tense standoff between police and Tuju’s legal team, led by lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, who raised alarms over his client’s spinal health.

Tuju, who underwent major spinal surgery in 2020, was reportedly “manhandled” during his arrest, causing complications with previously inserted medical plates.

While investigators from the DCI initially resisted moving him, medical personnel at the station insisted on a stretcher and specialized care.

Tuju remains under close observation as the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has already signaled its opposition to any bail requests pending his formal arraignment.
