Interior and National Administration CS Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a massive security deployment along major highways and entry points into the capital to safeguard lives, public property, and critical infrastructure ahead of today’s Gen Z memorial demonstrations.
The heightened security measures come exactly two years after the historic June 25, 2024 protests, with organizers planning nationwide memorial processions to honor those who lost their lives.
While affirming the government’s commitment to protecting constitutional rights, Murkomen emphasized that security agencies are on high alert to prevent economic disruption.
“Every Kenyan has the right to assemble, demonstrate and present petitions peacefully,” CS Murkomen stated in a public advisory adding that, “Security agencies have been deployed to keep people safe, protect property and critical infrastructure, and support the continuation of lawful activities with minimal disruption.”
This morning, commuters and motorists facing major transport corridors into the Central Business District (CBD) encountered heavy traffic disruptions, roadblocks, and rigorous vehicle screening.
The security operations have heavily impacted movement across several key routes:
Severe delays and roadblocks have been reported on Waiyaki Way, Thika Road, Ngong Road, and Lang’ata Road.
Commuters traveling from Kiambu, Ruiru, Githurai, and Ongata Rongai faced long queues at security checkpoints.
In several instances, public service vehicles (matatus) were reportedly turned back by authorities, forcing commuters to look for alternative transport or endure lengthy screening delays.
The Interior Ministry reiterated that while peaceful picketing is an absolute democratic right, it must be exercised with civilian responsibility. Demonstrators have been urged to coordinate closely with organizers and follow direct guidance from law enforcement officers on the ground.
“Respect fellow citizens, businesses and public property. Keep demonstrations peaceful and lawful,” the ministry advisory warned, noting that conduct must not endanger others or paralyze daily businesses.
Heavy police patrols and stationary security units remain highly visible at key transport junctions and around vital government installations across the Nairobi CBD to ensure order is maintained throughout the day.
