Kondele youths shun street protests and opt to register as voters

Residents of Kisumu largely bypassed planned Gen Z memorial protests on Thursday, choosing instead to flood voter registration drives on the anniversary of the historic 2024 anti-Finance Bill demonstrations.

The calm stood in stark contrast to the events of June 25, 2024, when nationwide protests culminated in the storming of Parliament. One year later, the mood in this lakeside city was decidedly focused on the long game: the 2027 General Election.

Nowhere was this shift more apparent than in Kondele, historically a flashpoint for intense political protests and street demonstrations, the neighborhood’s energy pivoted entirely toward civic action.

Scores of young people queued at makeshift Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) centers, swapping out barricades for voter cards.

The quiet streets followed a proactive push by local leaders just 24 hours earlier. On Wednesday, a coalition of youth leaders, traders, and residents staged a peaceful counter-march from Kisumu’s Central Business District to Kondele, advocating for dialogue over disruption.

Their arguments for avoiding the streets centered on two major pillars:

Traders argued that renewed unrest would cripple local businesses still reeling from past conflicts.

Residents emphasized the need to protect ongoing regional development projects and maintain hard-won stability.

The day’s events highlight a growing divergence in how Kenyan youth choose to channel their political frustration.

While memorial activities and active protests rolled out in other towns and cities across the country, Kisumu’s choice to prioritize electoral enlistment signals a calculated turn toward institutional change over street leverage.
