Uriri MP Mark Nyamita has renewed calls for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to conduct free, fair, and transparent party nominations ahead of the 2027 General Election, arguing that credible primaries are key to strengthening the party and promoting unity.
Speaking during a women’s empowerment fundraiser hosted by Suna East MP Janet Mohammed at Makasembo Primary School in Suna East Constituency, Nyamita urged the party leadership to safeguard members’ democratic rights by allowing them to freely elect candidates of their choice.
“As a democratic party, ODM must allow its members to freely elect leaders of their choice without interference. Credible nominations will strengthen the party, promote unity, and ensure those who emerge truly enjoy the confidence of the people,” said Nyamita.
His remarks come as political activity intensifies across Migori County ahead of the 2027 polls, where the race for ODM tickets is expected to be fiercely contested.
Historically, ODM nominations in the Nyanza region have been marred by disputes, including allegations of vote rigging, delayed declarations of results, missing ballot papers, technology failures, and claims of favoritism by party officials.
Migori County has witnessed several controversial nomination exercises, leading some aspirants to challenge results before party tribunals, while others defected to smaller outfits or ran as independent candidates.
Political observers note that because ODM remains the dominant political force in Migori County, securing the party ticket is often viewed as a decisive victory, overshadowing the general election itself.
Nyamita emphasized that transparent nominations would help mitigate internal disputes and produce candidates capable of solidifying party support ahead of the next general election.
