CS Labour and Social Protection, Alfred Mutua is a qualified pilot, fulfilling a childhood dream that began outside a humble wooden shack in Riruta Satellite.

Growing up in a tight-knit family with modest means, a nine-year-old Mutua would sit outside his home, gaze up at the Nairobi sky, and watch planes soar overhead.

He made a quiet promise to himself that one day, he would sit in the cockpit.

That spark turned into a lifelong passion during a Toi Primary School class trip to Wilson Airport, where the sights, sounds, and machinery of aviation mesmerized him.

Every Saturday, he would take the Kenya Bus No. 4 from Riruta to the Kenya National Library at Community to dive into books.

It was there he read a transformative passage in a Dale Carnegie book reflecting on human capability, pointing out that while humans can swim like fish and run like animals, flight was the ultimate frontier reserved for machines and those bold enough to master them.

The dream stayed alive through every chapter of his life. Even while pursuing his communications degree on scholarship in Spokane, Washington, Mutua took a job at the local airport simply to be near the tarmac, pilots, and aircraft.

Decades passed as career, family, and public duty took center stage, but the inner aviator never faded.

In 2023, he decided it was time to turn intention into action.

He enrolled at Ninety Nine’s Flying School at Wilson Airport.

Months of relentless night study sessions and weekend flight hours culminated in a defining milestone, a successful solo flight in Malindi. Within seven months of starting his coursework, he passed his examinations and officially earned his Private Pilot License (PPL).

Today, having trained on various aircraft across Kenya and South Africa through 99s Flying School and the Kenya Aeronautical College, Mutua has logged over 300 flight hours and takes to the skies nearly every weekend.
