Mosiria and Kenyans furious over beating of employees in Kitengela

Kenyans online have shown outrage over a video that went online of workers being subjected to physical assault by their employer.

The video, that was shared by Geoffrey Mosiria (Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service), shows an alleged incident involving a supervisor assaulting employees in Kitengela, near Chuna Mall.

“It is reported that employees are subjected to physical assault whenever they report late or delay in production. In some cases, their phones are confiscated, and they are beaten,” read the post by Mosiria.

“I call upon the Inspector General of Police, using government systems, to investigate this matter urgently and ensure that the employer involved is arrested for harassment and assault of employees,” the post further stated on his official Facebook page.

Mosiria further indicated that employees may be at fault occasionally, however, there are other ways to handle such matters rather than taking matter into the hands.

“While we understand that employees may make mistakes at work, no one should be subjected to violence, humiliation, or degrading treatment, especially as many of them are husbands and fathers trying to earn a living,” he stated.

“I will personally follow up on this matter if no action is taken within the next 24 hours to ensure that justice is served.”

He further indicated the need to relook at the employment acts and contracts.

“Additionally, there is a need to review the employment contracts involved to determine whether any such form of punishment is stipulated and whether it is lawful under Kenyan labour laws or if such practices are being justified under outdated or unlawful provisions.”
