Malunga West Football Club clinched the Susan Okwirry Sino–Nyamawira tournament trophy after defeating Malunga Central FC on post-match penalties at the Wagai Primary School grounds.
The two rivals had settled for a barren draw during regulation time before heading into the decisive shootout in the tournament sponsored by Gem West Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Susan Okwirry Sino.
The multi-sport tournament saw competitive action across several disciplines including, Girls’ Soccer where North East Gem emerged victorious after defeating North West Gem.
The volleyball category saw North West Gem lift the trophy after dismissing North East Gem in a highly contested finals.
North West Gem on the other hand were declared the queens of the netball court following a victory over North East Gem.
Speaking after the finals, the sponsor, Susan Okwirry, revealed that a total of 14 teams participated in the tournament, bringing together talent from all 10 sub-locations in West Gem Ward.
Supporting talents
The MCA, popularly known as Nyamawira, called on regional leaders to invest heavily in supporting youth talent development.
She further challenged young people to actively attend public participation forums to ensure their voices and priorities are captured in the county budget.
Siaya County Chief Officer for Governance and Administration, Walter Okello, who attended as a chief guest, lauded the initiative, noting that sports remain one of the most effective ways to engage the youth.
“When they showcase their talents here, scouts can spot them and promote them to the next level,” Okello said adding that, “Any platform that successfully brings young people together is a highly welcome idea.”
