Atlas Lions roar into last 16: Morocco knock out Netherlands in penalty shootout drama

Morocco have surged into the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after knocking out the Netherlands in a heart-stopping penalty shootout drama, following a grueling 1-1 draw through 120 minutes of extra time at the Estadio Monterrey on Tuesday.

Ismael Saibari turned out to be the ultimate hero under the lights, calmly slotting home the decisive sudden-death spot-kick past Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to spark wild celebrations and secure a highly anticipated knockout clash against Canada.

Footworks and tactics

The opening hour of the match unfolded as an entertaining tactical chess match dominated primarily by the Atlas Lions.

Midfielder Neil El Aynaoui first forced a world-class save from Verbruggen with a powerful header, before star fullback Achraf Hakimi twice went agonizingly close, first drawing a sprawling stop from the Dutch keeper and later rattling the crossbar early in the second half.

However, against the run of play, Ronald Koeman’s side gradually adjusted and broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute when Cody Gakpo latched onto a clever, threaded pass inside the 18-yard box, unleashing a composed low strike beyond Bono to hand the Oranje a precious 1-0 lead.

Refusing to surrender, Morocco threw bodies forward in a relentless final assault that finally paid off in the 90th minute.

Chemsdine Talbi floated an inviting, pinpoint cross into the box for Issa Diop, who rose highest to power a thumping close-range header into the top corner to rescue his side and send the match into extra time.

Morocco maintained their offensive dominance into the additional 30 minutes, with Soufiane Rahimi nearly ending it in the 96th minute only for Verbruggen to rescue the Dutch once more.

Penalty shootout

With both defenses completely exhausted by the final whistle, the grueling encounter shifted to a chaotic roller coaster of a shootout.

The spot-kicks proved to be a pure test of nerves as Soufiane Rahimi and Chemsdine Talbi converted Morocco’s initial kicks, while Wout Weghorst and Teun Koopmeiners kept the Netherlands level.

The tide turned heavily when Dutch midfielder Quinten Timber dragged his effort wide, followed immediately by Bono pulling off a spectacular diving save to deny Crysencio Summerville.

Morocco failed to capitalize immediately on the advantage as both Neil El Aynaoui and Achraf Hakimi shockingly missed their respective penalties, but Justin Kluivert failed to punish them, sending his effort crashing against the upright.

Stepping up under immense pressure, Saibari coolly sent Verbruggen the wrong way, burying his shot into the bottom-left corner to seal the historic victory as Morocco continues its quest to replicate their legendary, boundary-breaking tournament run.
