Police in Rachuonyo North are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old high school student at Mawego National Polytechnic on Monday morning.
The deceased, identified as Terryken Juma Odhiambo, was a Form Four student at Maseno National School.
He is reported to be the son of Chief Inspector John Odhiambo Juma, the Officer in Charge of Station (OCS) at Subwiga Police Station.
According to a police report, the incident was brought to light at around 4am by Tobias Lugano, the in-charge of Chakara Security Company attached to Mawego National Polytechnic.
Officers from the Kendu Bay Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Rachuonyo North sub-county immediately rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, investigators found the teenager’s body lying in a prone position in a pool of blood at the polytechnic’s basketball pitch.
He had suffered a single gunshot wound to the head, with an entry point on the left side and an exit wound on the right side.
Beside the deceased’s hands, police recovered a Ceska pistol (Serial Number: KE. KP A048836) loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition, along with an Oppo mobile phone.
Both the firearm and the phone have since been confirmed to belong to the teenager’s father, OCS John Odhiambo Juma.
A thorough search of the scene by forensic experts led to the recovery of one spent 9mm cartridge.
Domestic dispute
Preliminary investigations indicate that the tragedy may have stemmed from a domestic grievance where it is alleged that the deceased had a dispute with his parents after they confiscated his mobile phone.
According to authorities, the 17-year-old is suspected to have sneaked into his father’s bedroom while the senior officer was in the bathroom, taking the pistol and the phone before disappearing.
Shorty afterward, a gunshot was heard echoing from the neighboring polytechnic grounds.
The scene was fully processed and documented by DCI detectives. The body of the deceased has since been moved to the Rachuonyo South Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem examination will be conducted.
DCI Rachuonyo North has officially taken over the case to establish the precise sequence of events leading up to the fatal incident.
