Police officers from Bamburi Police Station have intercepted a major electrical infrastructure vandalism racket, recovering approximately one tonne of stolen steel conductors in the Shanzu area of Mombasa County.
Acting on intelligence indicating that a group of young men had been spotted moving suspicious wire cables, law enforcement officers mounted an ambush in Shanzu.
The operation led to the discovery of the massive cache of steel conductors, which the criminals had concealed in a nearby bush.
Preliminary investigations have since established that the recovered infrastructure had been cut down and stolen directly from the Shanzu Substation.
Homicide and tracking units managed to corner part of the syndicate during the raid.
Two suspects were arrested at the scene in connection with the theft and have been placed in police custody pending formal arraignment in court.
Officers recovered and secured three mobile phones left behind or held by the suspects, which have been documented as exhibits to help trace and apprehend additional members of the gang still at large.
The National Police Service highlighted that the theft and vandalism of power infrastructure continue to pose a severe threat to Kenya’s electricity network and macro-economic development.
The targeted destruction of substations, transformers, and conductors triggers prolonged power outages that disrupt critical services in homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals.
Beyond interrupting daily life, these criminal acts inflate operational repair costs for utility companies, destroy public infrastructure, and cause significant financial losses that are ultimately passed down to consumers.
