BY AGENCY: Team Kenya endured a challenging opening session today, Friday morning, at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, suffering losses across lawn bowls, 3×3 basketball, and boxing.

The day began with 59-year-old lawn bowler Anwar Hamada, who dropped his Men’s Singles Section D opener to Malta’s Shaun James in straight sets (2-10, 4-9).

Hamada, who will also compete in the men’s pairs, returns to the green later on Friday against Canada’s Ryan Bester at 17:50 EAT, hoping to chase top spot in the section to secure a semi-final berth.

Over on the court, Kenya’s 3×3 basketball squads faced tough opposition in their respective pool matches:

The quartet of Mary Lisa Omondi, Yvonne Otieno, Esther Minayo, and Babra Achieng fell 21-5 to Australia in Pool A, with four round-robin games remaining.

Making their Commonwealth debut via wildcard, the team of Itaken Kipelian, Milton Ilahuya, Robert Ngugi, and Ian Chege were outmatched 16-3 by reigning silver medalists Canada.

Capping off the morning session, bantamweight boxer Amina Martha bowed out of the Women’s 54kg Round of 32 following a unanimous decision (5-0) loss to England’s Lauren Mackie.

After a competitive opening round, a second-round knockdown left Martha behind on all judges’ scorecards (30-25, 30-25, 30-26, 30-26, 30-27).
