Pain of a mother: Kenyan woman demands answers and access to son’s body following custody death in Spain

SPAIN: A Kenyan woman is pleading to have a view of her son’s body and demanding answers following his sudden death in a Spanish prison.

George Ochieng Opodi Odongo, a 21-year-old Kenyan citizen holding Spanish nationality, passed away on August 12, 2026, while held in solitary confinement at Huelva Prison in Spain.

According to initial reports provided by prison authorities, the young man died as a result of smoke inhalation inside his cell.

However, his grieving mother, Hellen Ajwang, states that she has yet to receive a clear, official explanation detailing the sequence of events leading to the tragedy.

The mother’s anguish is deeply compounded by her inability to access her son’s remains.

Despite the body currently being held in a funeral home, she has been prevented from seeing him, verifying his condition, or performing a final farewell.

This lack of transparency has intensified her profound suffering and raised serious questions regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.

The family is urgently appealing for the intervention of the Kenyan Consulate in Spain to secure vital assistance.

The family’s pleas are for the mother to be granted access and say goodbye to her son’s body with dignity, obtain official, clear, and complete information regarding the cause and circumstances of death.

The family further requests to monitor the status of ongoing judicial and forensic investigations, ensure the preservation of the body and any related evidence as well as to be provided official consular representation and support before Spanish authorities.

To clear the opaque nature of the events that led to death of their kin, the family requests a full, independent, and transparent investigation into the incident and further receive timely updates on all procedures concerning identification, autopsy, custody, and the repatriation of the body.

The family further emphasize is that their objective is neither to obstruct justice nor to interfere with legal proceedings, but rather to secure basic human rights: the right to mourn, to receive honest answers, and to ensure accountability.

As the investigation continues, the mother awaits an urgent response and active intervention from diplomatic representatives to bring clarity and closure to this devastating loss.
