Why the DCI rearrested lawyer Angela Mulwa moments after securing cash bail

CITY NEWS: Lawyer Angela Mulwa was rearrested on Thursday evening by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide detectives, shortly after securing her release on a one million cash bail in a separate case involving the alleged theft of a Range Rover.

Mulwa is expected to be arraigned on Friday in connection with the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso, according to her lawyer, Danstan Omari, and the DCI homicide team.

Her rearrest came moments after she was released alongside Nelson Masiga in a case linked to the alleged theft of a Range Rover from a disputed 21-acre parcel of land in Mlolongo.

The property has since emerged in investigations into the circumstances surrounding Dr Mutiso’s killing.

Mavoko Senior Resident Magistrate Lilian Kwamboka had earlier declined a prosecution request to detain Mulwa and Masiga for an additional seven days, noting that the suspects had already been held for 14 days following their arrest on August 2.

The two were arrested after the Range Rover was recovered at one of Mulwa’s properties in Karen.

Mulwa had applied for a review of her bond terms to enable her release on cash bail.

She argued that members of her immediate family were also in police custody in connection with the murder investigation and therefore could not assist her in processing the bond.

The prosecution opposed the application, citing the high value of the disputed property, which it said was worth more than Ksh 900 million.

However, Magistrate Kwamboka ordered the release of the two suspects on a one million bond each, with a surety of a similar amount.

They were also directed to surrender their passports and other travel documents to the court.

Direct link to murder

The fresh arrest now links Mulwa directly to investigations into the death of Dr Mutiso, who was shot dead on July 29 while traveling to work in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area.

According to investigators, the cab carrying Dr. Mutiso was allegedly blocked by a black Toyota Prado at the junction of Mbagathi Link Road and Mawenzi Road.

Gunmen riding a motorcycle are said to have opened fire on the vehicle, critically injuring Dr Mutiso.

She was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mulwa’s arraignment on Friday is expected to shed further light on the allegations connecting her to the murder investigation, as detectives continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding Dr Mutiso’s death.
