A high-profile homicide investigation in Nairobi took a unexpected turn at the Milimani Law Courts when police re-arrested Nairobi lawyer Angela Mulwa moments after winning a key procedural victory against the state.

Mulwa now faces formal murder charges in connection with the July 29, 2026, killing of Dr Victoria Thunya Mutiso along Mawensi Road in Kilimani.

She is expected to be arraigned alongside her mother, Rose Mbithe Mulwa (also known as Rose Mbithe Ndetei), and a third suspect, Chris Mulwa.

According to the charge sheet, the three are accused of conspiring with other individuals who remain at large to execute the morning attack around 9:30am.

The re-arrest unfolded immediately following a court ruling that initially appeared to favor the defense.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had applied to extend Mulwa’s custodial detention to allow detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) more time to complete their file.

Defense attorney Danstan Omari fiercely opposed the application on jurisdictional grounds, successfully convincing the magistrate to dismiss the state’s request for prolonged holding.

However, the legal victory was short-lived; rather than walking free, Mulwa was immediately taken back into custody by police officers waiting within the court premises, as the DPP finalized the decision to officially prefer murder charges.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the high-profile nature of the victim and the accused, alongside the lingering mystery of additional suspects who have yet to be apprehended.

All three primary suspects are slated to take a formal plea in court, where the prosecution will officially present the capital charge sheet.
