Woman in Kiambu delivers 5 babies naturally at Thika Level 5 Hospital

Mercy Kanini, a mother from Juja in Kiambu County, has successfully delivered quintuplets through natural process at Thika Level Five Hospital.

The feat stands as a rare accomplishment in obstetrics, marking one of only five reported instances of natural quintuplet deliveries in Kenya’s recorded medical history.

Standard medical guidelines dictate that doctors perform Caesarean sections (C-sections) for high-order multiple births to mitigate extreme risks to both the mother and the infants.

Recounting the experience from her hospital bed, Kanini shared that medical staff initially prepared her for surgery immediately after she delivered her first baby.

However, following a clinical assessment, doctors determined she could proceed with a natural delivery for the remaining four infants.

Expressing gratitude to the healthcare team and the Kiambu County administration, Kanini confirmed that all five infants were safely placed in incubators under specialized neonatal care.

The birth marks her third delivery, having previously welcomed a son and a daughter.

Natural spontaneous conception of quintuplets without fertility treatments remains exceptionally rare, occurring in roughly one in 55 million pregnancies.

Globally, similar instances remain scarce; in May 2026, 35-year-old Bedriya Adem safely delivered naturally conceived quintuplets via C-section in Ethiopia after 12 years of trying for a child.

Her husband, Evans Nyamhanga, described the arrival of five newborns as a miraculous yet financially daunting milestone.

While the couple originally anticipated four babies based on initial scans, the surprise addition has stretched their family’s economic capacity.

Nyamhanga issued a public appeal to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and well-wishers to support the family with medical and essential care expenses as the newborns undergo routine nursery monitoring.
