Siaya Governor James Orengo has stated that the leadership of the Azimio la Umoja One party coalition, following the potential departure of ODM leader Raila Odinga to the African Union Commission Chair (AUC), will depend on the strength of each party within the coalition.
This statement casts doubt on the likelihood of Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka automatically assuming leadership after Odinga’s exit.
Speaking at the anniversary service for his nephew, also named James Orengo, in Sifuyo, West Ugenya, Governor Orengo emphasized that the future Azimio leader must reflect the party’s strength within the coalition.
“The next Azimio party leader is subject to discussion; however, it must reflect the strength of the party within the outfit. That is not only in the standing orders but also in the Azimio instruments. The ODM party is, by far, a major stakeholder in the coalition,” said the county boss.
Orengo further explained that the rules governing nominations and seats in both the National Assembly and the Senate are based on the strength of the political parties within the coalition.
He added, “The same rules apply as lawyers would say ‘mutatis mutandis’—meaning what is applied in the Senate and the National Assembly prevails in the manner in which individual member parties belonging to a coalition are given seats.”
His comments come amid dissatisfaction within the Azimio coalition, as members expressed concern over the nomination of four senior officials to serve in the cabinet with the ruling party. Many felt the Orange party should officially join the government.
As Odinga awaits the outcome of his bid for the AUC chair seat, speculation arises about who will fill his position. Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is a potential candidate, especially after Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua announced her intention to leave the coalition.
Orengo asserted that positions in the National Assembly occupied by Ugunja lawmaker Opiyo Wandayi and John Mbadi were designated for the Orange party and should remain within the coalition.
“Nothing has changed in the national assembly leadership. The individuals who were nominated and accepted to serve as CSs, the new people who have been appointed to replace them in those positions are also from ODM,” he added.
This statement by Governor Orengo, a key figure in Odinga’s inner circle, may strain the relationship between ODM and other political parties within the coalition
