Locals on Ndeda Island in Lake Victoria, Bondo sub-county, flocked together to glimpse a rare flamingo that had perched on the shores. This was a first for the community, who marveled at the beautiful bird, white with maroonish wings.

Officials from the Ndeda Beach Management Unit (BMU) quickly took action, carefully feeding it fish. “We have never seen this bird before on this island. It perched on the shores of the lake very early this morning, around 6 AM,” said Maurice Obor, Secretary of Ndeda BMU. He added, “The bird is friendly; even when approached by people, it doesn’t fly away.”

News of the rare flamingo spread rapidly, and soon the entire island was buzzing about their unexpected visitor. As if astonished by its unfamiliar surroundings, the bird gazed at the people before continuing to forage for food.

James Mbago, a resident of Ndeda Island, sees the bird’s arrival as a hopeful sign. “This may just be the beginning of good things on this island. Other flamingos may follow this one, and the island could turn into a beautiful site where birds flock, bringing tourists,” he shared enthusiastically.

Evans Alando, a Fisheries Officer, confirmed that the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) had been informed and was in the process of visiting the island.

Flamingos in Kenya are synonymous with Lake Nakuru, making its presence in Ndeda Island, kilometers away, quite unusual.
